Why volunteer with us?

The generosity of our huge team of volunteers never ceases to amaze us. They bring us their time, personalities and skills, and they take away more rewards then we could ever list here.

Around 400 volunteers oil the wheels of our children’s hospice, quite literally keeping us running. We just couldn’t manage without them. They contribute in countless extraordinary ways, helping to ensure we can keep supporting more and more children and their families.

Whether you have lots of time to give or a little, we’d love to hear from you. We’re growing fast, so we need all hands on deck. In exchange, we’ll provide you with all the skills and support you need to be a fulfilled and successful volunteer.

What could you do?

There are so many possibilities, it’s hard to know where to begin. Well, actually, we’ll start with YOU. Instead of asking if you wouldn’t mind doing this or that, we’ll ask you where your skills lie and what you’re interested in. Then we’ll match you to a role. And if the first thing doesn’t feel quite right once you’ve tried it, we’ll help you find something that does.

Because volunteers are vital to our success, there isn’t a single part of our charity that could run without them. So you might find yourself pottering around our gardens in your wellies, doing some ironing for exhausted parents, or reading to a sibling who feels a bit lost. You might rattle a tin at your local supermarket, give a stonking fundraising talk to a business, or encourage a school to get involved. You could be the face of our reception desk, the inspiration behind an event, or the creative person who keeps our charity-shop windows looking spiffy. We also want to hear about new ideas we’ve never even tried before. There’s something for everyone, and it all makes a world of difference.

What will you get out of it?

What won’t you get out of it? Everyone has their own motivation for volunteering, so we’ll do our best to make sure that’s fulfilled. Along the way you’ll also have a lot of fun, make new friends, do things you never thought you’d do – and help to change children’s lives for the better.

But you’ll also get a lot more than that, because we take volunteering very seriously. We treat our volunteers very much like our team members: you’ll get involved in discussions about what we do and how we grow, for example. Just like our team members, your achievements and loyalty will be rewarded through our recognition programme. You’ll have the opportunity to benefit from training and career development, too; in fact, many volunteers go on to join us in full-time paid roles.

Let some of our volunteers tell you their stories

A bit of small print

You’ll need to be over 18, with a DBS check, for some of our volunteering opportunities. For our retail and events roles, you’ll need to be at least 14. And we’re very sorry, but we just can’t offer work placements to students in any area of health and social care.
